Healing the Drama of the Inner Judge and Victim Child
Allan
Hardman has been exploring the “drama of the inner
judge and victim” for over twenty years—in the
inner worlds of clients and apprentices, and in his own
life. Here, Allan represents the culmination of that exploration,
and the latest refinements of his awareness, expertise,
and tools for healing this inner drama.
We
came into this world free of judgment and fear; however
it wasn’t long before we learned we weren’t
good enough to always meet the standards and conditions
of our parents, caregivers, and others that would assure
us our supply of love and safety. Whether your childhood
experience was gentle, critical, or violent, the message
was the same: “You are not good enough to deserve
and receive our unconditional love and acceptance.”
The
outer judge became a living voice in your own mind and probably
persists until now. That judge berates and criticizes the
child within, demanding a perfection that can never be attained.
The child within is a victim of the judgment, and tries
to get it right for the judge. The illusory reward is an
unconditional love and acceptance that can never be earned
by being good enough.
As
adults we learn to pretend we are okay-- we use strategies,
wear masks, and play roles to deny this background drama
of judgment and rejection playing out
in our minds.
We
can free ourselves from this drama with one simple experience:
Self-love and acceptance. But how do you get there, how
can you heal this inner drama, release your strategies,
and what is life like after you have learned to love and
accept yourself just the way you are?
